Trail Ratings Explained
How We Rate Our Trails
Our trails range from Rating 4 (challenging but moderate) to Rating 8 (extreme technical difficulty). Each rating determines the type of terrain, obstacles, and required vehicle setup.
Rating 4
Challenging terrain with loose rock, dirt, sand, and some slickrock. Features moderate erosion, washes, gulches, and rock steps up to 18″.
- Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, limited-slip differentials, good clearance.
- Recommended: Enhanced suspension and strong driving skills.
Rating 5
Rougher terrain with ruts, significant slickrock, steps up to 24″, and water crossings up to 12″.
- Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, traction devices (lockers or limited-slip).
- Recommended: Good clearance, enhanced suspension, winch.
Rating 6
Difficult terrain with erosion, slickrock, steps up to 36″, possible deep water and mud.
- Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, dual traction devices.
- Recommended: High clearance, enhanced suspension, winch, excellent skills.
Rating 7
Very challenging slickrock with steps over 48″ and steep grades.
- Minimum: 4WD, 35”+ tires, front/rear lockers, max clearance, tow hooks.
- Recommended: Winch, expert driving skills. Expect possible damage/rollovers.
Rating 8
Extremely demanding, similar to Rating 7 but more severe obstacles.
- Minimum: Same as Rating 7.
- Recommended: Winch essential, expert-level skill. High probability of vehicle damage.
Required Equipment
Before joining a tour, your SXS should have the following:
- Full Underbody Skid Plate – essential for protecting your machine.
- 33” or Taller Tires – for clearance and traction.
- Custom Roll Cage – greater protection than stock cages.
- Four or Five-Point Harness – for driver and passenger safety.
- Operational Winch – installed and ready to use.
- Soft Shackle & Recovery Gear – be ready for recovery situations.
- Side Mirrors – for monitoring your rear tires and surroundings.
About Our Guided Tours
To join a ride, you must:
- Bring your own machine, fuel, helmets, and safety gear.
- Provide proof of liability insurance.
- Have your machine in good working condition.
- Pass the Utah OHV test and show proof (link provided by your guide).
- Sign a liability waiver.
- Bring your own food and drinks (no alcohol permitted).
- Follow guide instructions — no reckless driving or racing.
Base Rate for four hours, up to four SXS – $450
Additional Vehicles: For each additional SXS – $100
Cardo Headset Rental: Highly recommended for drivers – $25
Additional Costs: Sales tax and permit fees are added to the total.
