Trail Ratings Explained

How We Rate Our Trails

Our trails range from Rating 4 (challenging but moderate) to Rating 8 (extreme technical difficulty). Each rating determines the type of terrain, obstacles, and required vehicle setup.

Rating 4

Challenging terrain with loose rock, dirt, sand, and some slickrock. Features moderate erosion, washes, gulches, and rock steps up to 18″.

  • Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, limited-slip differentials, good clearance.
  • Recommended: Enhanced suspension and strong driving skills.

Rating 5

Rougher terrain with ruts, significant slickrock, steps up to 24″, and water crossings up to 12″.

  • Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, traction devices (lockers or limited-slip).
  • Recommended: Good clearance, enhanced suspension, winch.

Rating 6

Difficult terrain with erosion, slickrock, steps up to 36″, possible deep water and mud.

  • Minimum: 4WD, 33”+ tires, dual traction devices.
  • Recommended: High clearance, enhanced suspension, winch, excellent skills.

Rating 7

Very challenging slickrock with steps over 48″ and steep grades.

  • Minimum: 4WD, 35”+ tires, front/rear lockers, max clearance, tow hooks.
  • Recommended: Winch, expert driving skills. Expect possible damage/rollovers.

Rating 8

Extremely demanding, similar to Rating 7 but more severe obstacles.

  • Minimum: Same as Rating 7.
  • Recommended: Winch essential, expert-level skill. High probability of vehicle damage.

Required Equipment

Before joining a tour, your SXS should have the following:

  • Full Underbody Skid Plate – essential for protecting your machine.
  • 33” or Taller Tires – for clearance and traction.
  • Custom Roll Cage – greater protection than stock cages.
  • Four or Five-Point Harness – for driver and passenger safety.
  • Operational Winch – installed and ready to use.
  • Soft Shackle & Recovery Gear – be ready for recovery situations.
  • Side Mirrors – for monitoring your rear tires and surroundings.

About Our Guided Tours

To join a ride, you must:

  • Bring your own machine, fuel, helmets, and safety gear.
  • Provide proof of liability insurance.
  • Have your machine in good working condition.
  • Pass the Utah OHV test and show proof (link provided by your guide).
  • Sign a liability waiver.
  • Bring your own food and drinks (no alcohol permitted).
  • Follow guide instructions — no reckless driving or racing.
We operate Monday–Saturday, with tours starting at 9 AM and running up to 6 PM. Our guides will lead you through terrain tailored to your skill level and desired challenge. You’ll get a mix of technical rock crawling, scenic stretches, and photo-worthy views — all while learning techniques from experienced locals who know the area inside and out.

Base Rate for four hours, up to four SXS – $450

Additional Vehicles: For each additional SXS – $100

Cardo Headset Rental: Highly recommended for drivers – $25

Additional Costs: Sales tax and permit fees are added to the total.

A versatile trail offering both scenic overlooks and optional extreme sections — perfect for mixed-skill groups.

Resurrection (Rating 5)

A balanced trail with a mix of obstacles, sandy stretches, and rock features — great for honing your skills without going full extreme.

Wayne’s World (Rating 5)

Fun and approachable for those newer to challenging trails, with a mix of rock, sand, and mild climbs.

Fault Line (Rating 6)

A mix of rock obstacles, ledges, and scenic stretches — perfect for a solid challenge without going extreme.

Slip Lock (Rating 6)

A technical slickrock route with fun ledges and narrow passages that demand careful tire placement.

Toquerville Falls – Rattle Snake Gulch (Rating 6)

A scenic adventure with a mix of rocky challenges and beautiful desert landscapes, ending with stunning falls.

Milt’s Mile (Rating 7)

A challenging slickrock route with steep climbs and technical ledges that will test your driving skills while rewarding you with amazing views.

Double Sammy (Rating 7)

A technical trail packed with tricky ledges, off-camber sections, and tight maneuvers that will test even seasoned drivers.

Dead Broke (Rating 7)

Rugged slickrock climbs and challenging drops make this trail a true test of skill and vehicle setup.

John’s Trail (Rating 7)

Classic Sand Hollow rock crawling with a mix of challenging climbs, descents, and off-camber sections.

Slip Lock John’s (Rating 7)

Combines the technical fun of Slip Lock with the challenges of John’s Trail for a full workout.

Ledges (Rating 7)

True to its name — a series of steep rock ledges and drops that will test your throttle control.

Mind Threat (Rating 7)

Tight, technical, and thrilling — every turn brings a new obstacle to conquer.

Plan B (Rating 7)

A well-rounded challenge for experienced drivers, with a good mix of climbs, ledges, and technical maneuvers.

Land Slide (Rating 7)

Features loose rock sections and steep, tricky lines that require careful navigation.

Death Row (Rating 8)

One of the most extreme trails in Sand Hollow, packed with steep drops, big ledges, and heart-pounding obstacles for experienced drivers only.

Triple 7 (Rating 8)

One of the toughest rides in Sand Hollow — steep inclines, big ledges, and serious commitment required.

The Maze (Rating 8)

A complex network of tight, technical rock lines and challenging climbs. Navigation skill is key here.

Fawlty Towers (Rating 8)

Massive rock steps, tight squeezes, and steep climbs make this a trail for expert drivers only.

Risky Biz (Rating 8)

Not for the faint of heart — extreme obstacles, steep descents, and a high probability of vehicle damage.

Unforgiven (Rating 8)

A brutal test of driver and machine — massive obstacles, steep climbs, and extreme technical sections.

Papa Smurf (Rating 8)

Big ledges, tight technical spots, and some of the most challenging slickrock climbs in Sand Hollow.
